Last winter I was lucky enough to go to Morocco with Roxy. I never thought I'd get to go snowboarding in Africa but it worked out. We even had a pow day near the end but the snow killed the power to the lift so we had to hike. Good times none the less. Here's a video from the trip.

BIRDS!

A few years back, I was shooting a friend snowboarding and a bird landed on my head. I jumped and it flew away. I thought that was awesome until I saw this:

And then I heard a bird story that was even more awesome. My buddy Conor was driving from Chicago to Portland and somewhere in Eastern Montana he hit a bald eagle doing 80 in a Camry. The bird smashed the windshield and glass rained down inside the car. Conor pulled over to look at the damage and when he got out, he saw the eagle standing on the side of the road with a stunned look on its face. The bird appeared to be okay and after standing there for a moment, it spread it's wings and flew away. The best part of the story is that Conor was driving and import when it happened.

It's A Small World After All

It really scares the bejesus out of me when I think about all the things we consume on this little rock in space which we all happen to live on. Sometimes I like to think about the luxurious life of a king in the middle ages. You know the guy. He has a sparkling crown and he's being fanned by a medevil babe while he eats grapes and a leg of chicken. It sounds pretty nice but when I compare his life to mine, I feel like I'm the one who's living the life of luxury. I live in a heated room where I have instant access to hot water, light and music. I have a car that can take me across the country at a moments notice. I can eat food, drink liquor and even water from virtually anywhere on earth. Sometimes I even have a modern babe around but she rarely fans me.

The movie "Home" does a good job of putting all of that in perspective and making you ask, "Is the current American middle class lifestyle realistic to sustain?" It's also free and goddamn gorgeous so you should probably check it out.

I've been spending a fair amount of time in Salt Lake this winter. Because of the city's large Mormon population and proximity to the mountains it's not your average town. Amber just showed me a great artist named Ricky Allman that once lived here and appears to use the city's temples and mountains for inspiration in his work. His art makes me think of a cross between an architectural drawing and an MGMT video, both things I like.

Spent the last week sledding somewhere in Northern California near the Nevada border. Pretty rustic time up there. To flush the toilet you had to fill up a bucket with water from the stream.

We sledded in at about 2am and I woke up a few hours later to a heavy fever and some food poisoning. In hindsight In-N-Out Burger wasn't a wise choice for a first meal back in America. (See previous post) The food poising was made even more interesting by the need for filling a bucket with water to flush the toilet.

We were told a week before we got there there wasn't really any snow. Then, just before we arrived a good base got laid down for us to sled in on. The second night we were there it snowed 8 inches and stayed cold and sunny the whole week. Super lucky.

The sledding was pretty mellow. I didn't get legitimately stuck a single time the whole week. The only incidents of sledding carnage were one rolled sled by Lexi and one headstand on the handlebars by Ryan.

High desert.

Leaving the place might have been the biggest adventure. Lexi had a sweet shortcut to speed up the drive to Reno. We ended up completely lost on some off-the-map roads that were way gnarlier and way more desolate than anything I saw in Africa. Luckily after a few hours on dirt we eventually made it back to pavement and finished the drive.

Totally lost.

Thanks to Jason and Bill for letting us use their cabin and to Eero for letting me use your sled.

Just made it to SLC now. To the Midwest on Thursday for a little time off then back to California on Monday.

Snow Up In Africa - Part Two

The pipe sucks in Africa. Just kidding... but not really. We spent about 6 days riding Oukamieden in Morocco. It was pretty good overall.

The terrain at the resort looks like it could be pretty amazing on the right day but it's hard to time it right at a resort that gets so little snow. We were lucky enough to see about a foot of snow one night but it might have been a bit too much because it killed the power for the rest of the trip. No power not only meant no electricity, save a few short bursts from 20 minute runs of a generator for the hotel, but no chairlift as well.

One interesting little adventure took place on our 3rd night in Oukamieden. As I tucked in for bed, the photographer I was rooming with, who we will call Gary for anonymity's sake, suddenly made the most horrific scream I have and probably will ever hear. I expected some sort of explanation for his yell, like maybe some horrible bug had jumped out and bit him or maybe he had seen the devil (the scream was bad enough that I wouldn't have doubted even that) but when I realized Gary wasn't going to tell me what had happened I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom where he was. When I got there, I saw Gary lying on the floor shaking like a wet dog as blood poured out of his mouth. It should be known that we were so far away from any sort of medical service that we might as well have been on the moon. Gary was in a tough spot. I tried to calm him down and put a pillow behind his head but he didn't even seem to notice I was there. He just lye on the floor shaking like hell with this terrified look on his face and blood running out of his mouth. Its hard to describe how gnarly it was at the time but I literally thought he was going to die right there in my arms. I yelled for help and luckily an old friend of Gary's came and that helped to calm him down and bring him back to reality. Gary had never had a seizure before in his life but he decided to stay in Morocco and he finished out the rest of the trip with no other problems.

Even with no lift we made the best of it. The girls all worked hard, rode very well, and got alot done. Thanks to Stine Brun-Kjeldaas, Anne Fast, Jasmine Wilson and all the riders for makeing it happen. Extra special thanks to our guide Stephan and his assistant.

As of right now I just to back to SLC and managed to lose my wallet on the way here. I usually don't lose stuff so I'm blaming it on not sleeping more than an hour last night and traveling half way around the world today. Tomorrow I have to get on a flight to Reno at 8AM and hopefully I'll have the wallet thing figured out by then.

Snow Up In Africa - Part One

Marrakesh is absolutely nuts. The streets here are a mess of cars, carriages, mopeds and donkeys. As far as I can tell there are zero traffic laws. The other night we saw a moped pulling a couple guys on rollerblades who were riding backwards into oncoming traffic. Life on the edge.

There are markets that extend to what seems to be the infinite. Some are covered by ceilings and resemble crowded shopping malls except ever so often, a motorcycle rips through the 10 foot wide hallway and parts the sea of shoppers.

If you walk into the touristy part of town guys will throw snakes and monkeys on you then ask for you money. Not really that awesome.

Preview of the resort we are going to today. The rumor is that conditions are top notch for the area. Best in the past two decades.

Signing papers last night to be able to film out of the Heli. This is getting finalized right now but apparently its nearly impossible to make this happen here. At breakfast this morning we were told that the last people that flew here payed 30k American for a few runs. The guy in this photo, Stephan, is our guide and is getting us a slightly more affordable deal.

Finishing Up In Utah

Last week in Utah we spent a few days riding epic pow at Brighton/Snowbasin and a day building a hip plus another smaller feature. On Saturday we made some things happen. Things such as 2 shots logged, sushi, and the twilight lounge. Monday we drove some sleds to Tahoe so that they will be ready for us when we get back from Africa. That's where I am now. Goddamn Africa. Its amazing. The place we are staying in is open air and its about 80 degrees F or better outside. More on that later.

Utah Time

For the past few weeks I've been in beautiful Salt Lake City, Utah. The burritos here are amazing. Barbacoa and Cafe Rio are two of the best Mexican chains that I've ever eaten at.

First week here we did some laps at Park City then when it stated snowing we took it to Brighton to do some real shredding. Mother nature blessed us with large enough sucker holes to give everyone their recommended dose of vitamin D. I even look somewhat tan for the first time in over a year.

After the weather got a bit more stable we went on a sledding trip. Even though I grew up in Montana where kids have been known to ride their sleds to school, until last week I had never piloted one myself. After all the horror stories of sleds breaking down 40 miles back/ripping peoples faces off I expected a pretty gnarly day but luckily it went off with almost no problem. I say almost because about 20 minutes into the sled ride in the right half of my face was covered in frost bite. Miraculously however, that all but cleared up by the end of the day. Possibly the greatest thing about sledding is that it will inevitably turn my toothpick arms into skull crushing meat sicks. Just what I wanted.

Today I went to Mt. Baker with Bart, Trevor and Helena. We built a jump and good times were had all around. I posted a shot of Trevor almost getting a back 5 below.

We saw the carnage from the flooding in Washington too. Things looked pretty treacherous but it sounds like the worst it over for now.

I was going to go shredding with some buddies in Northern Washington this weekend but a winter for the record books is still in heavy effect on the West Coast so its back to Portland tomorrow for me.

I-5 remains closed from exit 68 (11 miles south of Chehalis) to exit 88 (about 20 miles south of Olympia) for due to flooding. Death Drive to Montana

I made the snowy 14 hour (normally 9 hour) drive from Portland to Missoula yesterday. Not going to lie it was probably the diciest drive of my life but I made it intact and only killed one bird which exploded on my windshield while I was doing 70 on I-84 in eastern Oregon.

Today by buddy Adam Long and I went snowboarding at the resort I learned to shred at: Snowbowl. The place consists of two lifts from the stone age but it's still awesome. Adam started his day with four advil which he washed down with a shot of white coffee which seems to have "double the caffeen of normal coffee" He followed that with redbull smoothie. Luckily Adam's diet for the past 10 years has consisted of solely Wendy's and Little Ceaser's Pizza so his body is basically carved out of wood. We did laps at the top of the hill for the morning and made our way down the still closed runs in the afternoon which provided us with endless whiterooms and near heart attacks from being in less than ideal shape as we charged through knee deep pow. Good day.

The plan for today was to drive back to Montana but instead old man winter had to step in and close down a 50 mile stretch of interstate. At 300' elevation and there is about 8" of snow and the weather is not looking awesome for the next few days either. Let see some snowplows Oregon Department of Transportation... we've got a highway to open.

Robbie Cooper set up a Red Camera behind a TV and captured the facial expressions of kids playing videos games. I did this to my roommate once with a pocket digi cam while he was playing Mario Kart 64 and that got pretty ugly. Violent video games with innocent looking little kids is over the top creepy.

Cameras From the Future

Both of these cameras sound pretty nice but aren't available to the public yet.

The Ikonoskop dII is essentially a digital super 16mm camera that works with a wide range of lenses. It records an uncompressed image that will almost certainly look great but will also require massive hard drive space for storage. A single frame is 3.5 mb or about the size of an mp3 song file. At up to 60 frames per second, file sizes can get big quick.

The Red Scarlet works with a wide range of 16mm and super 16mm lenses as well as a fixed lens on one model. While it is higher resolution than the dII and probably lower in cost, it will be released much later. The camera works with a modular system so it will be highly upgradeable. Some say Red is only concerned with developing high resolution cameras and they lack focus on recording accurate or sufficient color data. Whatever the case, both of these cameras are likely to blow any currently existing digital camera in their price range out of the proverbial water.
